Overall ranking: 15th
Point Total: 15
Warning: Spoilers below!!!!
Lead Acting – 5
Wayne’s second best role.
Story – 3
Ending feels contrived. So does the Joanne Dru/Montgomery Clift relationship
Supporting Acting - 3
Weak romantic lead, John Wayne is lead and also heavy, so this leaves very little supporting cast. John Ireland effective as “good guy” gunslinger.
Landscape - 2
Hate to do this to such a quintessential landscape Western, but black and white is unsatisfying.
Comic Relief - 1
Brennan’s more annoying than funny in this. One point for effort.
Indian/Mexican/Civil War Themes - 1
Nice Mexican reference at beginning when Wayne steals ranch land from a remote Mexican owner, but one-dimensional Indians cost it a point.
